American Physical Society relocates 2018 conference to Florida in response to House Bill 2

August 04, 2016

The state of North Carolina reports another loss due to HB2. The American Physical Society’s Division of Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics cancelled a planned 2018 event in response to HB2. Officials with the group said they wanted to provide a welcoming environment for all members. This is an enormous loss for North Carolina, accounting for 1.43% of the total HB2 losses to date. Scheduled for the Charlotte Convention Center, the loss of this conference is an unfortunate side effect of the discriminatory bill.
"Although we were unhappy that withdrawing from Charlotte would punish the city whose ordinance precipitated HB2, we felt that it was imperative DAMOP and the APS provide a welcoming environment for all members."

- Steven Rolston, DAMOP Chair
Losing the American Physical Society conference is just a painful reality in NC until HB2 is repealed.
